“Blue Magic”

American Gangster is the latest from Ridley Scott, featuring Denzel Washington. Denzel in this movie plays Frank Lucas, a black man in the ‘60’s who flew to Southeast Asia to acquire heroine, and then sold it on the streets, calling his product Blue Magic, once back in America.

The central characters in the movie are Frank Lucas, played by Washington, and detective Richie Roberts, played by Russell Crowe. The movie recounts Frank’s means of smuggling heroine back to the United States via the U.S. army in Vietnam; it also portrays him as a family man, caring for his mother, and bringing her to church every Sunday; he is also loyal and respectful to his wife Eva. In the beginning of the movie, Frank phones home to North Carolina, and tells his brother, Huey Lucas (Chiwetel Ejiofor), to bring his whole family to New York. He impresses his mother with a grand house; once she is settled in, Lucas begins his “training” – he brings his brothers into the business of heroine-dealing.

The movie does not necessarily have a strong rise-to-power sentiment to it. Instead, the theme of the movie seems to me to be that Frank Lucas is a family man, who is very proper, dressing in suit-and-tie to social outings, and really shies away from the spotlight – he gets angry when his wife buys him a fur coat which he destroys in the fireplace.
