DJ Unk -- Beat'n Down Yo Block (Deluxe Edition)
Does anyone else think Walk It Out sounds exactely like 2 Step...?
I had a whole bunch of questions before reviewing this album... like if this album was released like a year ago, how come the dude featured in the song "Hit the Dance Floor" raps "Supaman that Ho" when that song is newer than the album? And how come the original version of "Slow It Up" didn't make the final cut of this album, (that version was dope!) Well, to answer my own question, this IS the deluxe version of the album, and that song "Hit the Dance Floor" was recorded recently and added to the album, hence Baby D raps the lines he raps. And "Slow It Up"... who knows? My best guess is that DJ Unk couldn't clear the samples. On a side note, alot of rappers have used that sample.
Okay, let's get into this album. I must admit that yeah, like my opening line said, I thought "Walk It Out" sounded exactly like "2 Step"! Only after I listened to Slow It Up was I finally convinced that DJ Unk did actually have talent. (He's consistent) And add to that, I didn't mind the remix to 2 Step either. (I think Jim Jones's verse is spectacular) [2 Steppin' / I got my goons reppin' / We turn the V.I.P. into the Do it do it session] mang, who knew! I respect Unk's hustle because he either produced or co-produced all of the songs on his album.
Anyway, this album is propelled by its singles. The deluxe version has the remixes to "Walk It Out" and "2 Step" on it. Track 19., called "Brand New Day", is my favourite track off the CD at the moment. The beat is laid-back and Unk reminisces of his past and spits about his current. However, with that said, about half the album contains no material that really stands out. I think track 9. "Flatline" is just horrible! The chorus is a bunch of brothers singing "Let's FUCK HIS ASS UP! Let's fuck his ass up!!! FLATLINNEEE...." To me, it's unlistenable.
3, '2 steps' out of 5
Top tracks:
2 Step, "" remix, Walk It Out, "" remix, Brand New Day, Hit the Dance Floor (remix), Smokin' Sticky Sticky.
